What is a root canal?

Root canal therapy, or just a “root canal” for short, is a treatment for infected teeth. A tooth infection occurs when the tough outer layers of the tooth are damaged, usually by a cavity or an oral injury. When this happens, the nerve and blood vessel-filled “pulp” inside the tooth is exposed to oral bacteria, and becomes infected.

Over time, this infection will kill the tooth. A root canal is used to prevent this. In a root canal, Dr. Goodyke will open up your tooth, clean out the infected material, then seal and cap the tooth to keep it healthy. A root canal halts the infection, eliminates your toothache, and protects your tooth.

The Benefits of Root Canal Therapy

Eliminate Pain

Toothaches from infected teeth can be extraordinarily painful. With a root canal, you can eliminate your pain and get back to your normal day-to-day routine.

Preserve Your Teetth

If you leave it untreated, your infected tooth may die and require extraction. Getting a root canal means you can save your natural tooth, and keep it for years and decades to come.

Prevent further complications

Along with tooth loss, infected teeth can cause other serious problems, including sepsis, a potentially life-threatening reaction to infection. Getting a root canal helps you avoid these complications.

Save Time & Money

Getting a root canal is a lot simpler and cheaper than getting an extraction and a replacement tooth like a dental implant, which may be needed if you don’t get treatment in time. So getting care right away means you’ll save time and money at Sparta Family Dentistry

The Root Canal Treatment Process

Cleaning & Anesthetic

To begin the appointment, Dr. Goodyke will clean the treatment area, then numb your mouth and isolate the infected tooth. Next, he will drill away damaged tooth material, and open up the tooth to gain access to the pulp.

Removing Decay & Pulp Tissue

Once he’s opened up the tooth, Dr. Goodyke will use a variety of special tools to clean up the area and remove the pulp. After the inside of the tooth is clean, he will sanitize it and fill it with a rubbery material called “gutta-percha.” This replaces the missing pulp, strengthening your tooth.

Temporary Crown or Filling Placement

Finally, he will place a temporary crown or filling on your tooth. Then, you’ll be sent home. You don’t need to do anything special to recover after your appointment, but you’ll usually need to come back in a few weeks to get a permanent crown. Make sure to come to any scheduled follow-ups after treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not at all. Your mouth will be completely numb during the process, so you won’t feel any pain during your treatment. Once your numbing wears off, you may feel some slight irritation or discomfort for a day or two, but that’s about it.

If you do have a lot of pain or your toothache comes back after your appointment, though, this could indicate that the initial treatment has failed. You should contact Sparta Family Dentistry for a follow-up so he can examine your tooth and take any necessary next steps.
